Robert Saleh is high on two overlooked veteran free-agent additions.

During his Saturday media availability, the New York Jets’ head coach spoke highly of edge rusher Takk McKinley and running back Tarik Cohen. Of McKinley, Saleh said he has an opportunity to “resurrect himself” with the Jets.

“He’s still young. I think he’s 28. … He’s a relentless worker and possesses all of the traits that we covert out of our defensive line. This will be the first opportunity for him to kind of be in a front that just lets him rip the way we do. Excited for the pads to come on to see where he goes from here.”

Regarding Cohen, Saleh said he looks good and “has his juice back” on offense.

“I’m excited to see him again with pads on, especially when we start scrimmaging against Washington and we get some preseason games, and Carolina and the Giants. He’s someone I’m looking forward to watching.”

It is only good news for the Jets that two low-risk signings are already making some waves. Cohen has looked shifty and explosive for the Jets on offense, making a mark in the passing and running games. McKinley has been a wrecking ball on defense, blowing up runs and getting after the quarterback.

The best football teams do not just rely on their stars, but also on diamonds in the rough they find in free agency or the draft. If Cohen and McKinley keep producing at their current level, they could very easily play a big role on a contending Jets roster.
