New York Jets part ways with Nick Bawden (for now)
One day after the New York Jets activated fullback Nick Bawden from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, the Jets released Bawden while signing tight end Anthony Firkser to the 90-man roster.
Firkser, 29, entered the league as an undrafted free agent following the 2017 NFL draft, signing with the Jets. Firkser was waived as part of the Jets’ final roster cuts ahead of the 2017 season. The tight end is a New Jersey native, having been born in Englishtown and attending Manalapan High School in Monmouth County.
After spending four seasons with the Titans, the Harvard product has bounced around the league, spending time with the Atlanta Falcons, New England Patriots, and Detroit Lions.
While Firkser only played two regular season games for the Lions in 2023, he did appear in all three of the team’s playoff games, logging 25 offensive snaps and 19 special teams snaps in the Lions’ deepest playoff run since 1991.
Entering his seventh season in the league, Firkser has appeared in 71 NFL games while recording 1,207 yards on 115 receptions. The veteran tight end joins a competitive position room that includes Tyler Conklin, Jeremy Ruckert, Kenny Yeboah, Zack Kuntz, and Lincoln Sefick.
With the Jets releasing Bawden, they no longer have a fullback on the roster. However, it is worth noting that this is not the first time the Jets have released Bawden. In December 2023, the Jets released Bawden to make room for Aaron Rodgers on the 53-man roster; the Jets then signed Bawden to the practice squad. There is a chance Bawden will be signed back to the Jets’ 90-man roster.
Bawden has played in 25 games in two seasons with the Jets, recording 45 total yards and one touchdown.
