Brandon Codrington made a statement during the New York Jets’ 15-12 preseason victory over the Carolina Panthers.
The Raleigh native put on a show for friends and family during the Jets second preseason game. Codrington notched a 63-yard kickoff return to start the second half. He also recorded a 31-yard punt return.

The defensive back out of North Carolina Central signed with the Jets as an undrafted free agent in May. Codrington was a standout on special teams throughout his college career, recording three punt return touchdowns and one kickoff return touchdown.
The odds of Codrington making the roster have been stacked against him from the get-go. However, with the new kickoff rules, NFL teams are expected to deploy two kick returners in the “landing zone.” Because of this, if Codrington continues to show promising play as a returner throughout the remaining practices and the Jets’ final preseason game, he could have a shot at cracking the Jets’ roster.
“[He] definitely seized his opportunities,” Jets head coach Robert Saleh said. “I think he was, for both teams, the most productive [player]. He set up a couple of scoring drives. That’s what he’s here for. That’s why we brought him in, his punt return and kick return ability. I thought he did a really nice job today.”
When Codrington was asked about his road to making the Jets’ 53-man roster, he said, “I’m trying to make the most of my opportunity. Making sure every time I step on the field, I’m giving my all, no regrets. If I mess up, I make sure I’m flying around.”
