Since C.J. Mosley has been sidelined due to a toe injury, New York Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood excelled in Mosley’s shoes.
Ahead of the Jets’ Week 4 matchup against the Denver Broncos, defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich praised Sherwood for his performance in filling in for Mosley.

“He’s a guy that obviously was a converted safety when he got to us, very unfamiliar with the linebacker position,” Ulbrich said. “Everything was brand new to him, but it has gotten to that place where the game is really starting to slow down for him. He’s getting really comfortable at the position and he’s got some innate leadership that’s really cool to see.”
Ulbrich continued, “He’s done a great job, he really has. Jamien’s another one of those guys who, you guys know that have been around him, his approach on a daily basis is unmatched as far as how hard he works at this thing.”
Playing a career-high 98% of the Jets’ defensive snaps in the team’s win over New England, Sherwood finished with five tackles and one missed tackle. He thrived in coverage, allowing only 15 yards and zero first downs on four targets.
In three games this season, Sherwood has recorded 21 tackles, one tackle for loss, and one pass breakup. His coverage has been particularly impressive. The former safety has allowed only 4-of-8 targets in his direction to be completed for 23 yards and no first downs. Sherwood has a coverage grade of 80.2 at Pro Football Focus, ranking fifth-best among linebackers this season (min. 100 snaps).
Really good coverage play by Jamien Sherwood. Doesn't bite on PA, recognizes the over route, and shows great awareness by getting out in front of the route instead of chasing down the receiver. Puts himself in perfect position to impede the pass pic.twitter.com/LqWF5hpkJm

Sherwood aims for success again this Sunday against the Denver Broncos, as he is expected to earn his second consecutive start. Mosley (toe) is listed as doubtful.
