NY Jets film breakdown: What is the deal with Aaron Rodgers?

What is going on with Aaron Rodgers?

That is the question every New York Jets fan has on their mind after the four-time MVP quarterback threw three out-of-character interceptions in London, proving to be the difference in a 23-17 loss.

For non-Jets fans, there is no question at all. There is only a truth: Aaron Rodgers is washed up.

Is it as simple as that? Or does the reality require a bit more nuance?

Obviously, it is the latter. Only two weeks ago, Rodgers had a dominant performance that the entire football world labeled as “vintage” Rodgers. Now he’s suddenly washed up?

The truth, as always, lies in the middle. No, Rodgers isn’t washed up – at least not yet. However, he definitely performed very poorly by his own high standards over the last two games. There are concerning signs on film that must be cleaned up for him to get back to a level of play that can help the Jets win games.

Numerous issues are contributing to Rodgers’ recent struggles. Many are his own fault and cannot be blamed on anyone else. We have seen decision-making mistakes and errant throws that are abnormal for him.

However, there are also issues with the supporting cast that are making life difficult on Rodgers. Even in a dismal performance against the Vikings, Rodgers made plenty of high-quality of throws, with some of them being dropped. If those passes were caught, the conversation might be different today.

Plus, the Jets’ abysmal running game is forcing them to revert to a predictable pass-heavy offense, which is not ideal for a 40-year-old quarterback.

The conversation around Rodgers’ level of play is far more complex than national media talking heads want you to think. We dive into that conversation in the latest episode of Blewett’s Blitz, breaking down the All-22 film to analyze everything you need to know about Rodgers’ performance against the Vikings.

We also dive into the rest of the key takeaways from New York’s trip to London.

  • Why is the running game so bad?
  • How come Rodgers and Garrett Wilson cannot get on the same page?
  • Is Nathaniel Hackett’s scheming and play calling as much of an issue as people claim?
  • Will firing Robert Saleh help to fix any of the issues plaguing the offense?
  • Who were the main factors in the defense’s dominant performance?
