New York Jets at New England Patriots Week 8 preview: Now or never

There are plenty of things that make people happy.

Movies. Television shows. Going for a run. Hanging out with friends.

Usually, watching sports can be directly inserted into that group. However, that has not been true for those following the New York Jets.

Despite what looked like a talented roster and sky-high expectations, the Jets have fallen flat on their face.

Their offense is extremely inconsistent and has not played to the expectations that were set before the season started. The defense has been banged up and struggled immensely against the run. The coaching has been inconsistent at best on both sides of the ball.

Add in changes at head coach, offensive play-caller, and multiple big moves that brought Davante Adams and Haason Reddick into the fold, and this has been a season full of chaos for the Jets.

The Jets are at 2-5 and in dire straits. Their HP is at 1, and one more hit could knock them out. However, they could find a way to rebound and regain their stamina with some positions.

As a result, this weekend’s matchup for New York is an inflection point for the 2024 season. And, of course, their opponent is the New England Patriots.

If the Jets win, they can try to piece their 2024 season back together. If they lose, it will likely spell the true end to an era that never really began in the first place.

Either way, Sunday’s game will offer some great entertainment, and our preview should have you all ready to get your popcorn and enjoy the show.

Jets vs. Patriots Game Info

  • New York Jets (2-5)
  • New England Patriots (1-6)
  • 2024 NFL Week 6
  • Sunday, October 27th, 1:00 p.m. EST
  • CBS
  • Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, Massachusetts

For at least one week, the Jets are not in primetime.

For their pivotal division matchup, the Jets and Patriots will kick off at 1:00 p.m. ET from Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. CBS will carry the telecast, as Spero Dedes, Adam Archuleta, and Aditi Kinkhabwala will be the broadcast team. Dedes and Archuleta will be in the booth, while Kinkhabwala will be on the sidelines.

New York is switching up their road uniform combination for Week 8. They will have their white jerseys and green pants, as opposed to the all-white combination they used in previous weeks.

Jets vs. Patriots Game History

While the Patriots still hold a wide margin over the Jets in their all-time history, the Jets made up ground already in 2024.

In Week 3, the Jets soundly defeated the Patriots by a score of 24-3. It was the best game the Jets played the entire year and gave New York its second straight victory against New England.

While things have spiraled since then, New York hopes to repeat its road performance against the Patriots.

Jets vs. Patriots Game Odds (DraftKings Sportsbook)

Despite their struggles, the oddsmakers still respect the Jets when facing the Patriots.

According to DraftKings Sportsbook, the Jets are currently 7-point favorites against the Patriots. They also have a considerable money line advantage, being listed at -325 compared to New England’s +260. In terms of the expected points, the number is at a relatively average O/U of 41.

The odds make complete sense. The Jets have been bad, but the Patriots have been much worse. Both teams are struggling to score but should be able to put up some points. As a result, the lines have fallen where they have.

Jets vs. Patriots Injury Report

New York Jets

  • OG Alijah Vera-Tucker, Ankle-Out
  • DL Leki Fotu, Knee-Out
  • S Ashtyn Davis, Concussion- Out
  • S Tony Adams, Hamstring-Doubtful
  • WR Allen Lazard, Chest-Doubtful
  • OT Morgan Moses, Knee-Questionable
  • TE Kenny Yeboah, Abdomen-Questionable

The Jets are dealing with a laundry list of injured players. While star defenders D.J. Reed and Michael Carter II are set to return, New York will be without their two starting safeties. They are likely to be down two key contributors in Vera-Tucker and Lazard on offense, while they could potentially miss Moses as well.

Like last week against Pittsburgh, the team’s depth will be heavily tested. Jalen Mills and Isaiah Oliver will have to step up at safety. Mike Williams will be relied on as a main target when the Jets go with three wideouts in the field.

The team must pray that their interior OL and DL can hold up, as Vera-Tucker and Fotu’s absences will limit their depth.

New England Patriots

  • WR Ja’Lynn Polk, Concussion-Out
  • OG Layden Robinson, Ankle-Out
  • OT Vederian Lowe, Ankle-Questionable
  • DE Keion White, Ankle-Questionable
  • DB Jonathan Jones, Shoulder/Personal, Questionable
  • OG Mike Jordan, Ankle, Questionable,
  • OG Sidy Sow, Illness, Questionable
  • LB Sione Takitaki, Knee, Questionable,
  • DE Daniel Ekuale, Abdomen, Questionable
  • LB Raekwon McMillan, Back, Questionable

Quite frankly, the Patriots might be one of the only teams that can match the Jets’ injury report.

From key offensive linemen to the best players on their defense, New England is in danger of losing key contributors across the board. This is a very rough situation for the Patriots, but one that could benefit the Jets.

Jets vs. Patriots Prediction

  • Jets defeat New England, 20-17

Look, this game is going to go one of three ways.

  • Option 1: The Jets blow out the Patriots and start rolling for the rest of the 2024 season.
  • Option 2: The Jets narrowly escape New England with a victory. The vibes are still in the toilet and they end up getting blown out by Houston.
  • Option 3: The Jets are upset by the Patriots, and the whole season goes in the tank.

I would love to sit here and say that option one is the likeliest option. I would love to say that New York is going to go on a run and turn around their whole season.

However, I cannot do that without the results to back up that sentiment. In reality, New York has been an inconsistent football team that has been more bad than good over the past few weeks.

Until the Jets show the results, I cannot say that a blowout is likely. The Patriots, for as bad as they are, present unique challenges that the Jets could struggle with. Quarterback Drake Maye is a wildcard and could exploit a poor New York run defense. Rhamondre Stevenson is also the perfect player to exploit that weakness.

I am taking the Jets to win this one by a narrow score of 20-17. But this one will be a slugfest and rock fight, where the Jets will have to power through adversity and rely on their offense to succeed all game. If that can’t happen, they could be in some trouble in Week 8.
