Another bombshell report from The Athletic about the New York Jets dropped on Saturday morning. The headliner from the story was Aaron Rodgers’ desire to continue playing for a different team and the possibility he may be released in-season. Some interesting notes about the firing of Joe Douglas were also included.
According to Dianna Russini, who cited an NFL executive close to Douglas, the Jets’ former general manager felt a sense of “relief” after being fired, “particularly from the challenges of working under Woody Johnson.” The executive shared that Douglas went fishing at the Jersey Shore only a few hours after he was fired, stating that it was “the happiest [Douglas] has sounded in a long time.”

Russini reports that Johnson’s motive for firing Douglas in-season was to “allow the organization to begin strategizing for the future,” and to “show respect to Douglas by not having him remain in the building while discussions about his potential successor were underway.” While the move stunned people around the league, it did not come as a surprise to Douglas, per Russini.
Another fascinating tidbit regards the Jets’ search process for new leadership. According to Russini, the Jets are reaching out to franchise legends for input. She states that the team is “actively imploring the opinions and input of franchise legends and respected figures around the NFL.”
Another revamp is underway in Florham Park. While nobody outside of Florham Park can be sure exactly how that revamp will play out, one thing is for certain: Joe Douglas seems thrilled that he is not a part of it.
