Even when they’re not on the field, the 2024 New York Jets remain squarely in the limelight.
It was a tumultuous bye week for New York and its starting quarterback, Aaron Rodgers. Not only did the team fire general manager Joe Douglas, but numerous reports and rumors leaked out of the organization, including one that claimed Rodgers wants to play in 2025, but not for the Jets.
Rodgers responded to those rumors during his Tuesday appearance on The Pat McAfee Show.
“I’m not jumping off ship. … I don’t even know if I want to play yet, but New York would be my first option,” said Rodgers.
Rodgers added that his decision will hinge on how his body feels and whether the new regime wants him back.
Rodgers is due to have a $23.5 million cap hit next year. He is also due an additional $49 million in bonus money, which is spread out across four void years from 2026-29. If the Jets wish to cut ties with Rodgers in 2025, they can release him with a post-June 1 designation to save $9.5 million in cap space. He would still have a $14 million cap hit in 2025 and a $35 million cap hit in 2026.
It has been a rocky 2024 season for the 40-year-old quarterback, who will turn 41 next month. In 11 starts, Rodgers has led the Jets to a 3-8 record, completing 63.4% of his passes for 2,442 yards, 17 touchdowns, and seven interceptions.
Out of 36 qualified quarterbacks, Rodgers ranks 21st in passer rating (88.9), 22nd in adjusted EPA per play (0.07), 26th in QBR (51.4), 28th in net yards per attempt (5.5), and 31st in completion percentage over expected (-1.9%). Rodgers has led the Jets offense to just 27th in scoring with 18.5 points per game, a measly 2.7-point improvement over the team’s 29th-ranked average in 2023 (15.8).
