“Very similar to what I did last year (with Commanders). A lot of information gathering. A lot of contacts I do have, a lot that I know. I’ve already interviewed a lot of the guys that are going to be on the list … like this podcast, I’m just a scout in the corner. I’ll give my opinion, I’ll help with the interviews, I will talk to a lot of people, collect the information, give the information, and let the owner of the Jets make the final decisions.”
Earlier this year, Spielman assisted the Washington Commanders in their head coach and general manager searches, which resulted in the hires of Dan Quinn and Adam Peters. The hires have led to a resurgent season for the Commanders, who have a 7-5 record and rank top-five in scoring.
Spielman also said that he would be more of an “information gatherer” and that former Jets’ general manager Mike Tannenbaum would lead the search for The 33rd Team. He added that the Jets saw his knowledge of candidates and the hiring process as beneficial.
It seems that, for their latest head coach and general manager searches, New York wants to rely on expertise. Woody Johnson does not want to go in blind and wants people with football knowledge to help run and oversee the search.
Is the process guaranteed to work? Of course not. But it is better than what the Jets have done previously, and it will be fascinating to see how the Jets build up their list of candidates with the help of The 33rd Team.
