One day after a rumor surfaced that he plans to request a trade from the New York Jets, Garrett Wilson faced the media on Thursday.
As expected, Wilson was pressed about the rumors. Given a chance to ease fans’ nerves regarding his future with the team, Wilson provided an uninspired response that is likely to only make them more terrified.
Asked whether he would like to stay with the Jets long-term if they offered him a contract extension, Wilson responded in an indifferent tone, “Uh, I don’t know, man. I’ll just figure it – I’ll just do whatever. You know. Whatever. Go about my day. However uh… be where my feet at. You know?
“And if they do [offer an extension], that would be a blessing. That would be awesome. I love the Jets. At the end of the day, they were the ones that believed in me. So, yeah, you know. But yeah, I can’t be worrying about all that. Just go and finish these three games the right way. I don’t know, man. I can’t be looking into all of that right now.”
You never want to read too deeply into a press conference response, as Wilson might truly be focused on the Jets’ final three games, having no interest in discussing his future at the moment. However, Wilson seemed to be trying his hardest to dance around the question, stuttering his way through the answer while showing little enthusiasm about the idea of remaining a Jet. It was a golden opportunity to proclaim his desire to stay with the organization, but he passed it up.
Wilson’s bio on X reads “NY Jet TTWFO,” which stands for “Till The Wheels Fall Off.” We shall see if Wilson stands on those words when the Jets’ new regime presumably approaches him about a contract extension this offseason (they would be foolish not to). If he does not, it is easy to guess what his motivation might be.
As of right now, the trade rumors will only intensify after Wilson’s media appearance. He had a chance to squash the rumors but added fuel to the flame. And when it comes to disgruntled star receivers in the NFL, where there’s smoke, there’s often fire.
