According to ESPN’s Rich Cimini, Aaron Glenn may be very interested in the New York Jets’ head coaching position. But there might be one opening that he covets more.
Veteran reporter Josina Anderson wrote that a league source feels the Saints and Jets will fight over Glenn.
SI’s Albert Breer made the same connection between Glenn and the Jets and Saints. So did Jets X-Factor’s Michael Nania, who predicted that New Orleans would be Glenn’s destination.
It makes sense that these would be the two franchises most closely linked to Glenn. Glenn played for the Jets and also scouted with them. He also played for the Saints briefly in his last NFL season when current general manager Mickey Loomis was there, and he was their secondary coach for five years before joining the Lions.
Which franchise Glenn will choose is hard to say. Given his more recent ties with New Orleans, that feels like a more natural choice. On the flip side, the Saints remain in perpetual cap purgatory, and they are more than $50 million over the cap for next season after clearing $16.7 million in cap space.
Then there is the question of whether Woody Johnson wants to hire Glenn. The Jets seem to prioritize previous head coaching experience, something the fan base is on board with. As Jets X-Factor’s Robby Sabo warned, though, experience should not be the primary factor in the search.
Jets fans are well used to desired candidates and players going in a different direction. It is unclear if the fan base even wants Glenn, especially with the inexplicable clamoring for Rex Ryan. Count Sabo and Nania in on Glenn, though. (Me? I have a list of candidates I don’t want — ahem, Matt Nagy — but for everyone else, I’ll reserve judgment.)
For now, though, keep a close eye on the Detroit defensive coordinator. Multiple sources have linked him to the Jets at this point, but they may have stiff competition even if they do want him.
