The New York Jets finally got one of the deals done, but one more remains.
After the Jets agreed to terms with Aaron Glenn to become their new head coach, the focus is on deciding on the team’s next general manager. It appears the pool is down to three names, two of which are set to undergo in-person interviews on Thursday, per Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer.
While Glenn’s signing has generated excitement, all eyes now turn to the Jets’ search for a general manager to pair with him.
On Tuesday, the Jets interviewed Lance Newmark, the current assistant general manager of the Washington Commanders.
Newmark had spent several years with Glenn in Detroit and was seen as the favorite for the role. Many expected that he would be announced as the new General Manager shortly after Glenn’s hiring.
Instead, it appears there will be second interviews for two more candidates.
Per Breer, Darren Mougey and Trey Brown are scheduled to interview with the Jets for the second time (on Thursday). Mougey is currently the assistant general manager of the Denver Broncos, whereas Brown is the senior personnel executive for the Cincinnati Bengals.
Furthermore, the Jets intend to wrap this up as quickly as possible. CBS NFL insider Jonathan Jones reported that the Jets are expected to make a decision by Thursday.
All three candidates boast backgrounds in scouting and have helped bring teams back to relevance in recent years.
While Newmark remains the frontrunner, the Jets’ decision to conduct second interviews is a pleasant surprise. The Jets are committed to a thorough process and chose to explore beyond the obvious Newmark-Glenn pairing that screams “familiarity.”
Based on the resumes, all three candidates bring unique strengths to the table.
Whoever the New York Jets choose as the new general manager will obviously loom large. He will play a critical role in shaping the roster alongside head coach Aaron Glenn.
Time is of the essence with the Senior Bowl in just over a week.
