When the New York Jets signed Leki Fotu last season from the Arizona Cardinals, the hope was that he would be able to be an instant impact player for their struggling run defense.
Those hopes were dashed before the team even played a meaningful game.
Fotu played in all of just two games for the Jets while struggling to stay on the field with multiple injured reserve designations. New York’s defense struggled and the team won only five games leading to wholesale changes in coaching and front office management.
Now, Fotu has a new home.
Jets Former Tackle Signs Elsewhere
Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported Monday evening that Fotu signed a free-agent contract with the Las Vegas Raiders.
The former fourth-round pick had visited the Buffalo Bills as well before choosing to run to the Silver and Black out West. Fotu, an Oakland native, now joins the team that was a staple in his community.
In five seasons in the NFL, Fotu has recorded 3.5 sacks to go along with 12 total tackles for loss.
He had just three total tackles in two games with the Jets last season.
New York was prepared for this loss. The Jets signed Byron Cowart and Derrick Nnadi to pair with All-Pro defensive tackle Quinnen Williams.
Fotu’s departure is a clear and frustrating reminder of just how bad things got for the Jets back in the 2024 season, and how much there is still to do to wash away the struggles of that nightmare.
