New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn knows all about the excitement and build-up leading to the NFL draft. As a former first-round cornerback, the next few weeks are a special time that Glenn knows quite well.
However, Glenn’s playing career is over, and he understands his new responsibilities take him to Florida first instead of Green Bay.
With league meetings kicking off over the next few days, all 32 head coaches and owners head to Palm Beach, FL, to take part in media availability before the draft and to vote on some of the biggest submitted rule changes made over the last few months.
For the Jets, it’s another chance for Glenn to answer key questions about where the team is heading into April. Even if many of those answers may not be what New York fans are looking for.
Aaron Glenn, Jets expectations
If there is something that the Glenn regime has shown in the first two months, it is the very real fact that the team has not tipped their hand about certainly draft picks or players that they want to target.
There are no leaks, no anonymous sources, and no major complaints.
It’s easy to see that the same tight-lipped mindset will continue in Florida for the week. Glenn doesn’t want to give too much up when it comes to what the Jets want to build at this point.
While many Jets fans celebrate the kind of tight-lipped structure New York is working with, the same could have been used to describe Joe Douglas’ first few years with the Jets.
The lesson? Until games start being played, Glenn and the Jets can be as tight-lipped as they want without the pressure of results, which essentially opens them all back up as they tend to.
Despite the goal of being quiet, there are still plenty of topics fans and the media could learn more about in the coming days.
Justin Fields and QB1
When New York gave Justin Fields a two-year deal worth $40 million, the money was not something that most bridge quarterbacks receive on the open market.
Especially bridge quarterbacks who are told they would have to compete for a starting role.
Money aside, Glenn has made it clear that the team will have each position competing with each other early in the process. Will that stay the same in his breakfast interview session?
Even if New York drafts a quarterback, the team is still expected to turn to Fields to run the show in 2025.
Draft positions of value
The fanbase is currently split about whether the Jets should focus on drafting a playmaker like tight end Tyler Warren or stars in the trenches such as right tackle Armand Membou.
Glenn won’t openly state whether or not the Jets are focusing on any one player. It’s far too early to determine who is going to be the pick when New York is on the clock with the seventh overall pick.
But if the new head coach states his commitment to winning through the trenches—as many coaches do—it could be something of a tip of the scales that teases New York may be focusing on the lines of the team over any potential weapon.
Contract extension updates
New York has added plenty of young talent in free agency, and it’ll acquire even more at the start of the 2025 NFL draft. The big focus now, though, has to be whether or not the team chooses to re-sign young stars like Garrett Wilson and Sauce Gardner.
Both players are expected to be the top players getting new deals this offseason, but they aren’t the only ones to focus on.
Breece Hall, Jermaine Johnson, Alijah Vera-Tucker, and even All-Pro linebacker Quincy Williams need new deals.
Glenn may not be open to stating whether the team is close or not with some of these players, but the Jets are in a position where these players will be the focus for the remainder of the offseason.
