Jets continue organizational reshuffle: offering buy-out to employees

The New York Jets may have a new head coach and general manager, but those aren't the only changes coming for the organization.

Ever since the New York Jets hired general manager Darren Mougey and head coach Aaron Glenn, the organization has gone through an organizational shuffle at every level of the franchise.

Now, we know just how extensive that reshuffle is.

The Sports Business Journal reported Monday morning that New York offered buy-outs to roughly 170 of its 250 employees. The deadline to accept those buy-outs is today.

It’s another example of a changing culture with the Jets.

Jets Reshuffle Culture

As part of the report from SBJ, the Jets buy-out announcement does not come from a place of financial struggles, rather a push to try and change the entire culture of the team under new leadership.

The Jets are reportedly offering these buy-outs without a minimum threshold for years of service – a rare occurrence when companies go through situations like these.

New York has missed the postseason for 14 straight seasons – the longest active drought in North American sports. They also recorded their ninth straight losing season last year, which led to the dismissal of former general manager Joe Douglas and head coach Robert Saleh.

Along the way, criticism of Jets owner Woody Johnson has grown.

“Despite the on-field futility and growing chorus of criticism for Johnson,” SBJ writes, “the Jets’ business staff is generally well-regarded around the NFL for maintaining attendance and growing sponsorship revenue despite the long winning drought.”

Under a new regime, the Jets are looking to flip their culture around completely. That includes bringing in new people from around the league to help with that process.

And for those that have stayed over the years, it appears New York is giving them a chance to leave for greener pastures elsewhere.
