The unfortunate side of the New York Jets winning only five games during the 2024 season was the fact that they weren’t good enough to compete for a playoff spot.
But they also weren’t bad enough to get a top-five pick in the upcoming 2025 draft.
Because of that, they will be at the mercy of six other teams to make their picks and hope that they can land the player they were hoping to draft by the end of that process.
The good news, though, is that the Jets may end up getting their top target regardless.
Todd McShay’s Draft Update
NFL draft analyst Todd McShay reported Saturday afternoon that the Tennessee Titans canceled workouts with two of Colorado’s top prospects in the incoming draft.
Along the way, the second and third overall picks may be willing to give the Jets the kind of hope they were looking for.
“So the Titans have respectfully canceled private workouts with Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders, making it all but official they will take Cam Ward No. 1,” McShay said. “And now I’m starting to hear more and more about Hunter to Cleveland at No. 2. That would mean Abdul Carter vs. Shedeur for the Giants at No. 3.”
It’s extremely important that Sanders is available for the Giants with the third overall pick. If New York takes the quarterback, it would only be better news for their cross-town rivals moving forward.
Jets Positive Impact
The Jets need an offensive tackle, defensive tackle, tight end, and receiver. As things stand currently, they will be able to get one of the top available players at those positions with their seventh overall pick.
The only thing New York needs to do is hope the best available player is around by the time they make their pick.
As things stand, the Jets’ top target appears to be Missouri tackle Armand Membou. He has an extremely high ceiling and could solidify the offensive line for years to come.
New York just needs to ensure that Membou – or any other player they want at seven – will be available, though.
McShay’s reporting should all but confirm that, at the very least.
For Cleveland to take Hunter means the Giants would need to choose between Sanders and Carter. New York is in desperate need of a young quarterback and could absolutely take the signal-caller based on ownership making a point to have a long-term solution at the position.
Remember, New York has Kayvon Thibodeaux (a player the current regime drafted in the top 10) and Brian Burns (who the team gave a large contract to last year) still on the roster.
That leaves Carter to go to the New England Patriots, who are considered the strongest candidate to select Membou before he reaches the Jets. New England needs edge rusher help and would be an excellent fit for the Penn State product. Projections of Mason Graham to Jacksonville and Ashton Jeanty to Las Vegas would allow the Jets to land Membou without any concern.
Things can change in a dime in the weeks leading up to the draft. But recent reports show that the Jets might just come away with the player they have been looking for all along.
