The Breece Hall trade rumors continue to heat up less than three weeks away from the start of the 2025 NFL draft.
According to ESPN’s Rich Cimini, the New York Jets may “consider” trading Hall if Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty is still available when the Jets select with the No. 7 overall pick.
“Hall is a gifted player who would attract interest if dangled in trade talks,” wrote Cimini. “Perhaps the Jets would consider moving him if Boise State star Ashton Jeanty is available with the seventh pick in the April 24 draft.”
After a breakout sophomore season in 2023, Hall was expected to take another leap in 2024. Instead, the running back took a noticeable step back.
Hall, a 2022 second-round pick, showed promise of being one of the NFL’s top running backs in 2023, finishing second among running backs in scrimmage yards (1,585) despite operating in a bottom-tier offense. With upgrades along the offensive line and more offensive stability, his third year looked promising on paper.
That promise didn’t translate to the field.
Hall’s rushing total dipped to 876 yards, a drop from his 994-yard mark the year before, despite seeing nearly the same workload (just 14 fewer carries from 2023). His efficiency declined as well, averaging a career-low 4.2 yards per carry. He also struggled with ball security, fumbling six times, double his combined total from his first two seasons.
Now heading into the final year of his rookie deal, Hall’s future with the team remains in question. As a day two draft pick, he is not eligible for a fifth-year option.
If Jeanty is still on the board when the Jets pick at No. 7, he could be difficult for general manager Darren Mougey to pass on. Jeanty is widely viewed as one of the rare blue-chip prospects in this year’s draft class.
Jeanty delivered a season for the ages in 2024, putting together one of the most dominant campaigns ever by a college running back.
Jeanty piled up 2,601 rushing yards and 29 touchdowns, averaging a staggering 7.0 yards per carry. His yardage total came within 30 yards of Barry Sanders’ long-standing single-season FBS record.
A 2024 finalist for the Heisman Trophy, Jeanty also led all FBS and FCS backs in missed tackles forced (152) and yards after contact (1,970), showcasing his highly impressive vision, power, and elusiveness.
If Ashton Jeanty is still available when the Jets are on the clock at No. 7, New York may have no choice but to shop Breece Hall.
