Is newly signed New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields really the second-best rushing quarterback in the NFL?

According to ESPN’s Mike Greenberg, the answer is yes.

Speaking with me on “NY Flight Jets Talk,” Greeny expressed his excitement about the Jets’ decision to sign Fields this offseason. He labeled the former Ohio State Buckeye the second-best rushing quarterback in the NFL, behind only two-time MVP Lamar Jackson.

“There’s only one quarterback in the entire NFL who runs with the ball better than he [Fields] does, and that is Lamar Jackson,” said the longtime broadcaster. “I think he is a really good roll of the dice.”

While Fields has not consistently solidified himself as a top quarterback in the league, he has undoubtedly flashed his impressive athletic ability. Fields has 2,509 career rushing yards, the third-most in history over a quarterback’s first four NFL seasons, trailing only Cam Newton (2,571) and Lamar Jackson (3,673).

The former first-round pick also set the single-game quarterback rushing record in 2022, rushing for 178 yards against the Miami Dolphins, slightly surpassing Michael Vick’s previous record of 174 yards.

While Fields must develop into a more poised passer, his athleticism gives him the potential to be a top quarterback in the league. He now has the opportunity to prove his worth in New York with the Jets, as general manager Darren Mougey gambles on the 26-year-old’s high upside, hoping he’s the long-term answer under center for Gang Green.

Mougey officially named Fields the team’s starting quarterback at the NFL’s annual owners’ meetings.
