Is Jets’ budding interest in defensive star legit?

The New York Jets are reportedly very interested in a popular defensive star, but should fans buy into the hype?

There are a number of different ways the New York Jets can go with the seventh overall pick in the 2025 draft.

They can focus on solidifying the offensive line, target a top pass catcher, or even take a flier on the defensive side of the ball. When it comes to the defensive side, though, one prospect appears to be the apple of Aaron Glenn’s eyes at this point.

And it’s a player that Jets fans remain pretty split on.

Jets Have Interest in Defensive Star

Speaking on NFL Network this week, league insider Ian Rapoport announced that the Jets have done extensive work on Michigan defensive tackle Mason Graham.

“Michigan DL Mason Graham, one of this Draft’s elite prospects, is visiting the Jets tomorrow, source said,” Rapoport said. “NYJ has spent a considerable amount of time with Graham, including formal interview at the Combine, dinner the night before his Pro Day and now the Top 30 visit.”

There are a number of reasons for the Jets to be interested in Graham. He’s the best interior defensive lineman in the draft class, and the Jets are looking for more interior help opposite of All-Pro star Quinnen Williams.

Just because the Jets have shown interest doesn’t mean New York will take him at seven, though.

For one thing, Graham and Williams play the same 3-tech role on a standard 4-3 defense. Could the team try him out to play opposite Williams? Sure.

But when you draft a talent in the top 10, you want to make sure you have him in a role where you know he will be a standout in. We just don’t know if Graham can play the role that originally went to Kenneth Grant in Michigan’s defense. That doesn’t mean he’s a bad player, it just means he may not be the right fit for New York.

Temas can have “interest” in a player for a number of different reasons. Sometimes, it’s simply a warning shot to other organizations in front of them that if a certain prospect falls, they will jump quickly at the opportunity to make that pick.

Other times, the organization may really like the player in a system they can work with.

There is still plenty of time for New York to identify their top target with the seventh overall selection.
