“Now batting for the Yankees, No. 7, Justin Fields … No. 7.” Imagine the late great Bob Sheppard announcing Justin Fields’s batter’s box presence in the three-hole.
Interestingly, Fields was a standout middle infielder in high school, but his football dreams took precedence. Even more interesting is that those dreams led him to the bright lights of New York, with the Jets, where he can now enjoy two professional baseball clubs.
Recently, Fields attended a Yankees game in the Bronx and called his shot, according to his Instagram account.
Well, ok, so it technically wasn’t his shot. He called the shot for Aaron Judge, who blasted a home run (as seen in the video, courtesy of SNY’s Yankees Videos on X).
Fields, 26, signed a two-year deal worth up to $40 million in free agency to become the Jets’ starting quarterback. Drafted in the first round by the Chicago Bears in 2021, Fields is now on his third NFL team after playing with the Pittsburgh Steelers this past season.
He’ll take the reins from Aaron Rodgers, which means Jets fans should expect a completely different offense in 2025. A myriad of quarterback-designed runs, zone-read concepts, and RPOs will be littered throughout Tanner Engstrand’s playbook.
As far as the diamond is concerned, Fields was on hand for the Yankees’ 4-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night. Judge’s leadoff homer in the top of the seventh inning broke a three-run tie that ultimately propelled the Bombers to victory.
Perhaps Judge will invite Fields to every home game from here on out, because that homer ended a 10-game home run drought for the Yankees captain. Then again, the quarterback certainly has more pressing matters on his mind—getting to work on the New York Jets’ epic playoff-less drought.
