As first-round talents go, former New York Jets edge rusher John Abraham was one of the more productive in team history over the course of his career.
Fifty-three and a half sacks in six seasons, including three Pro Bowl nods and an All-Pro nomination, are just some of the numbers behind Abraham’s run with the team from 2000-2005. Fond memories are heightened due to team success, as the Jets were more than relevant with him on the roster, reaching the playoffs three times and winning two games.
While the majority of his career was not spent with the Jets, Abraham is still considered a franchise great. The ferocious EDGE defender gets to do something special for the organization that drafted him 25 years ago with the 13th overall pick.
John Abraham, Jets draft announcement
With under a week to go before the start of the 2025 NFL draft, the league announced the list of former players who will be on hand to announce select draft picks for some of their former teams.
Abraham—as part of the Legends of the 2000 Class—will announce New York’s second-round pick. The Jets hold the 42nd overall pick on Day 2.
The former 13th overall pick is one of seven players from the 2000 class announcing draft picks for their former teams.
Additional names include former league MVP Shaun Alexander (Seattle Seahawks), Keith Bulluck (Tennessee Titans), Dante Hall (Kansas City Chiefs), Julian Peterson (San Francisco 49ers), T.J. Slaughter (Jacksonville Jaguars), and Dez White (Chicago Bears).
Abraham’s time with the Jets
Abraham was traded to the Atlanta Falcons for the 29th overall pick that year. The selection would later become Jets legend Nick Mangold, but it still was a departure for one of the team’s best edge rushers of the era.
The South Carolina product is third all-time in Jets history in sacks behind Mark Gastineau and fellow 2000 draft pick Shaun Ellis.
While he didn’t play for as long as Ellis or Gastineau did in their times with the Jets, Abraham will have his chance to be honored as a former Jet next week.
