Could the New York Jets really select a cornerback with their first-round pick in the 2025 NFL draft? According to a prominent NFL insider, that is a real possibility.
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, people around the league believe the Jets could potentially select Texas cornerback Jahdae Barron with the No. 7 overall pick if they elect to go the defensive route with that pick.
“If the Jets target the other side of the ball, some people around the league believe Glenn could target a cornerback, with Texas’s Jahdae Barron as an option,” wrote Schefter.
Barron, a product of John B. Connally High School in Austin, Texas, initially committed to TCU as a four-star recruit before ultimately switching to Texas.
Over the course of five years with the Longhorns, including three as a starter, Barron played in 57 games, amassing 226 tackles (21 for loss), eight interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), 24 pass deflections, and a forced fumble.
His standout campaign came in 2024, when he played in 16 games and posted 67 tackles (three for loss), five interceptions, and 11 pass breakups.
The Texas native is recognized for his remarkable closing speed and adaptability in the secondary, having logged experience at nickel, outside corner, and even safety.
Ranked 14th overall on Mock Draft Database’s consensus big board, selecting Barron at No. 7 may be a stretch for the Jets, especially following their offseason acquisition of Brandon Stephens on a three-year, $36 million deal.
However, Schefter isn’t the only one linking Barron to the Jets at No. 7. SI’s Albert Breer recently described him as a “curveball” to watch for New York in the first round.
If Darren Mougey decides to use the team’s first-round pick on the defensive side of the ball, Barron may be an option.
