At one point in his college football career, Jordan Travis was a shoo-in to be a Heisman Trophy finalist.

Now, Travis is out of the NFL just two years into his career with the New York Jets.

In a shocking turn of events, the former Florida State star announced his retirement in a post on the Jets’ team website.

Travis Announces Retirement

Travis appeared on the precipice of college football stardom during the 2023 season. He led Florida State to an undefeated season, and many considered the captain a finalist for most awards that year.

In four seasons with Florida State, Travis totaled 99 touchdowns 10,665 yards of total offense – breaking many program records. He was named the ACC Offensive Player of the Year for his efforts.

However, a dislocated and fractured ankle suffered late in the season not only ended his final year with the Seminoles, but it also began a very long rehab process. New York drafted Travis with the 171st overall pick in the 2024 draft.

But after spending his entire rookie season on the Jets’ reserve/NFI list and speaking with doctors this offseason about his recovery, Travis has been advised to walk away from the game.

“On November 18, 2023, my life took an unexpected turn,” said Travis in a statement courtesy of the team’s website. “I gave everything I had to the rehab process but despite all my efforts, my leg never responded the way we hoped. After much prayer and consultation with the doctors, medical experts and my agent, I’ve been medically advised to retire from the game I love so deeply.”

Travis will be placed on the Jets’ reserve/retired list. His decision will be a harsh and devastating reminder of how quickly the game can change for any player. Seeing Travis walk away from the game at just 24 years old is a sad reminder that the shelf life for most NFL players is a lot shorter than fans realize.

“Jordan has informed us of his intent to retire due to the injury he sustained while at Florida State,” GM Darren Mougey said in a statement. “It is unfortunate that he was unable to get back on the field after working so hard. We support his decision and wish him only the best.”
