Biggest Takeaways From Schedule Release
2009 Comparison Is Real
When Rex Ryan became the Jets’ head coach, he had New York out to a 3-0 start. That year, they beat a good, but not great Houston Texans team to open the season, the top dog in the division in New England at home, and a top team the previous year in Tennessee.
This year, the Jets get a good but not great Pittsburgh Steelers team to open the season, the top dog in the division with the Buffalo Bills at home, and then a showdown against a playoff team in Tampa Bay on the road.
They may not start 3-0 like Ryan did, but this year’s slate has a lot of similarities to that of the beloved 2009 team.
Minimal Travel in Dog Days of Season
Not having to travel long distances in the middle of the season is important for any team. It will especially be important for New York midway through the year. Following their Week 8 road game in Cincinnati, the Jets’ only road games over the next six weeks are in New England and Baltimore.
That can matter if New York keeps this thing competitive later in the year.
Winnable Stretch To End 2025 Gives Hope
Five of the Jets’ final six opponents failed to reach the playoffs the year prior. Jacksonville, Miami, Atlanta, and New Orleans are franchises in flux right now. New England hopes to take a step forward, but only won four games last year.
These are winnable games. Add in a contest to end the year against a Buffalo team that should have the division locked up, and the Jets could get on a hot streak to end the year.
It may also erase any slow start should New York suffer through one.
Rodgers Rematch Defines Week 1
Boy, the NFL is really hoping Aaron Rodgers becomes a Pittsburgh Steeler. It’s the only reason that makes a Steelers-Jets season-opening game at MetLife worth the price of admission at this point.
While Rodgers has not officially signed a contract with Pittsburgh yet, that’s where all roads seem to be heading. If not, then the Steelers become a very capable Week 1 win for the Jets.
Jets Avoid Bills Collapse Midway Through Season
Over the last three seasons, the New York Jets hit a wall during the middle of the season. In 2022 and 2023, their midseason road losses in Buffalo sent the season into a tailspin.
That won’t be an issue this year for the Jets. Avoiding Buffalo in Orchard Park until the final week of the season is great news for New York because it minimizes the potential for an absolute catastrophe that the coaching staff would have to handle. Instead, the Jets’ Buffalo trip lands at a point where the Bills might be resting starters.
This is a very winnable schedule for the Jets. They just have to go out and take care of business.
