The New York Jets’ mandatory minicamp began Tuesday in Florham Park. There is plenty to learn about the Jets’ new regime as practices begin. However, the biggest early storyline is who showed up.
Notably, both star cornerback Sauce Gardner and wide receiver Garrett Wilson were in attendance. Both players are looking for new contracts as they head into their fourth season.
It has become increasingly common for star players to sit out of training camp as they hope to sign a new contract. Notably, Steelers outside linebacker T.J. Watt and Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin are currently holding out.
Gardner drew attention to this last week as he stirred the pot regarding McLaurin’s ongoing contract dispute. While holdouts are becoming more common around the NFL, that is not the case in Florham Park.
It’s an encouraging signal for head coach Aaron Glenn that both players are in attendance. This is after the Jets had nearly 100% attendance at the voluntary practices in May, according to Glenn.
The Jets’ stars have shown up in good faith. Now it’s up to first-year general manager Darren Mougey to match their commitment. As training camp gets started, the Jets have reportedly made offers to both. However, there have been no updates since this was reported in late May.
While no deals are finalized, their attendance at camp sends a clear message: they’re committed… for now. With negotiations ongoing, the Jets would be wise to lock in their franchise cornerstones before Week 1 arrives.
