The New York Jets are narrowing down their options at the kicking position ahead of training camp.
Following the addition of kicker Harrison Mevis, the Jets announced they have waived kicker Anders Carlson.
A sixth-round pick out of Auburn in 2023, Carlson signed with the Jets in November 2024 and kicked in five games for New York, connecting on 81.8% of his extra point attempts and 80% of his field goal attempts with a long of 58 yards.
It was reported on Tuesday that the Jets had signed Mevis, after the team hosted him for a workout last week. New York has now confirmed the addition.
Known for his large 6-foot, 242-pound frame that earned him the nickname the “Thiccer Kicker,” Mevis delivered an impressive showing in the UFL this past season as the Birmingham Stallions’ kicker. Over 10 games, he hit 20 of 21 field goals (95.2%), with a long of 54 yards.
Following Carlson’s release, the Jets’ kicking competition now consists of Mevis and undrafted free agent Caden Davis.
Throughout his five college seasons at Texas A&M and Ole Miss, Davis appeared in 58 games, converting 98.2% of his extra point attempts and 76.8% of his field goals, with a long of 57 yards.
Speaking with the media during the Jets’ mandatory minicamp, special teams coordinator Chris Banjo detailed the key traits he looks for when evaluating kickers.
“I would just say consistency,” said Banjo. “That’s the biggest thing, consistency, and how guys respond to tough situations or situations that may not have went their way.”
This summer, all eyes will be on Mevis and Davis as they battle for the job, each aiming to prove they can bring stability back to the Jets’ special teams unit.
