Past Garrett Wilson, every available target in the New York Jets’ offense is up for grabs.
New York’s wide receiver room is filled with players from every type of background. It includes rookie draft picks, former undrafted free agents, steady veterans, erratic veterans, and a sixth-year journeyman looking to prove his worth: Tyler Johnson.
Johnson was taken by the Buccaneers in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL draft after an extremely productive college career at Minnesota (3,094 yards, 30 touchdowns). Lacking impressive speed but displaying solid strength at 6-foot-1 and 208 pounds, he projected as a physical possession receiver in the NFL.
So far, Johnson has shown occasional flashes, but he has struggled to find a home in the NFL. He has spent time with four organizations across five separate stints. In 49 career games, Johnson has recorded 76 receptions for 828 yards and four touchdowns.
In 2025, Johnson joined his fifth NFL team, the Jets, on a one-year, $1.3 million deal with $367K guaranteed. It is a prove-it deal that affords Johnson a chance to earn a spot on New York’s 53-man roster.
Johnson is coming off his best NFL season. In just 199 route-running opportunities for the Rams, Johnson recorded 26 receptions for 291 yards and a touchdown. He set a career-high in yards per route run (1.46). Johnson showed improved elusiveness with the ball in his hands, forcing a career-best eight missed tackles, more than double his career total of six over his first four seasons.
Is Johnson trending up? Does he have a legitimate chance to become a hidden gem for the Jets’ offense?
Only the film can answer those questions.
