You’ve heard the phrase: “An offensive line is only as strong as its weakest link.”
Going into the 2024 season, many people thought John Simpson would be the New York Jets’ weakest link up front. Signed to a modest two-year, $12 million deal, Simpson seemed like a placeholder surrounded by big-name linemen.
Despite the low expectations from fans and media, Simpson’s film with the Baltimore Ravens showed a player who could be much better than his salary let on.
That turned out to be the case.
Simpson started all 17 games for the Jets and established himself as one of the team’s most reliable players on either side of the ball. In both the run and pass games, he was a solid starter for the Jets’ offensive line.
Going into 2025, Simpson is set to retain his role as the starting left guard on a unit filled with high-level prospects. Each of the other four projected starters was either a first- or second-round pick by the Jets. New York hopes that each of those players can reach their ceilings as some of the best players at their respective positions.
But even on a line as talented as this, Simpson is far from a weak link. Based on his performance in 2024, he is on a trajectory to become one of the better guards in the NFL if he continues building on his progress from the last two seasons.
Exactly how good was Simpson in 2024? Where can he still improve, and is he capable of making those improvements? Should the Jets extend him?
Only the film can answer those questions.
