New York Jets fans have plenty of reasons to feel confident in the teamโs quarterback depth. Just ask head coach Aaron Glenn.
Speaking to reporters after Gang Greenโs second training camp practice, Glenn expressed strong confidence in veteran backup Tyrod Taylor while addressing Justin Fieldsโ toe injury.
โListen, we have an outstanding backup in Tyrod, who has been in this league for around 14 years. So, the leadership that he brings, listen, we’re all good. We’re all good.โ
Glenn expressed confidence in how the offense would look with Taylor.
“If anything does happen to Justin, I don’t think there’s any drop-off as far as what we want to do when it comes to play calling. [They are] very similar when you talk about skill set. That was enticing to us.”
The first-year head coach also raved about Taylor’s leadership.
“And then the leadership ability. Things that we heard about him, I played against him before. And you can just tell the players really gravitate to him. When he says something, everybody really listens. Even the coaching staff. He’s been around this league a long time and he knows what it takes to win. And he’s a really good person. We’re all really excited to have that guy here.”
Taylor, 35, is entering his 14th NFL season and his second year with the Jets. Throughout his lengthy career, the 35-year-old signal caller has proven to be a reliable backup option, posting a 28-28-1 record as a starter.
During the 2024 season, Taylor played garbage time reps for New York, where he looked confident. He completed 17 of his 22 passing attempts for 119 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions.
Taylorโs experience and leadership have made him a reliable depth option within the team’s quarterback room. A former Pro Bowler, he has started games for five different NFL teams and is known for his ability to manage games effectively and avoid turnovers.
With Fields undergoing further evaluation for a dislocated toe, Taylor becomes the likely candidate to take first-team reps if the injury sidelines Fields in the short term.
The Jets also have undrafted rookie Brady Cook and second-year signal caller Adrian Martinez behind him on the depth chart.
Though losing a starter is never ideal, New York appears well-positioned to weather the uncertainty, thanks to one of the leagueโs more seasoned backup quarterbacks.
