It has only taken a couple of weeks, but the New York Jets’ injury report has skyrocketed. It’s no longer just borderline roster players, either. Some of the team’s top talents are currently nursing injuries.
That shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. New York has held a very physical training camp to this point under first-year head coach Aaron Glenn.
The push for more physical practices has been apparent from the very beginning of training camp. Padded tackle drills and full scrimmages have left several of New York’s top players on the injury report – with even more coming.
Jets’ Injuries Mount
Tuesday’s practice was more of the same for the Jets – a defensive win, struggles on the offensive end, and several players going down with injuries.
Glenn noted after practice that edge rusher Will McDonald (back spasms), tight end Mason Taylor (high ankle sprain), quarterback Tyrod Taylor (knee), cornerback Azareye’h Thomas (shoulder), and defensive tackle Byron Cowart (ankle) all suffered injuries during Tuesday’s work alone.
Running back Breece Hall was seen going inside the team facility during practice with what looked like an injury, but returned later on.
These injuries only add to a list that already included All-Pro Quinnen Williams, safety Malachi Moore, and receiver Xavier Gipson.
The list has now grown to four potential starters, three rotational players, an important backup, and multiple rookies – not exactly what you want to see in the first week of August.
This is what New York signed up for with Glenn as their coach, though. Part of the appeal with a former player like this is that he will bring a physical and disciplined style to the team in 2025 and beyond.
With a physical style of play comes injuries, though. When Glenn was defensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions, the unit was dealt a bad hand by being the most injured team in all of football last season. Glenn was still able to make it work, but the rash of injuries directly hurt Detroit’s chances of competing for a Super Bowl.
Glenn needed to instill his own identity into the Jets roster this year. Holding physical training camps is the best way to do that.
But the downside to having those kinds of practices is that the injuries mount up exponentially.
New York is living through that reality now… even if Glenn isn’t worried in the long-term.
“Injuries are part of this game and there’s no way to hide from them,” Glenn concluded last week.
