For the first time since being named head coach of the New York Jets, Aaron Glenn took the field in a game setting.
The Glenn era began with plenty of highs in a 30-10 beatdown over the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field.
Saturday could not have started any better for New York’s starters on both sides of the ball. The Jets’ defense forced a three-and-out to open the game courtesy of two pass breakups from All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner.
Then Justin Fields and the offense took over.
Fields orchestrated a 10-play, 79-yard touchdown drive that was capped by a 13-yard touchdown scramble to put the Jets up 7-0. New York’s starting quarterback was an efficient 3-of-4 passing for 42 yards, while adding 14 yards on the ground during the opening drive.
“He had command of the offense,” Glenn said at halftime. “I’m excited with the way he played.”
Following the touchdown drive, Fields and the starting offense sat for the remainder of the game. Young signal-callers Brady Cook and Adrian Martinez carried the offense the rest of the way.
While the Packers’ starters were unable to score on their own in their two drives, the backups, aided by some Jets’ defensive penalties, got on the scoreboard with a 46-yard field goal midway through the second quarter.
Just a few minutes later, though, Leonard Taylor strip-sacked Malik Willis in the end zone, which was recovered by Jay Tufele for a defensive touchdown and a 14-3 Jets lead. Tufele added a sack and multiple pressures throughout the night as well.
The complimentary football had New York rolling in their debut with the new coaching staff. Late in the second quarter, a 54-yard punt from Austin McNamara was muffed by former Jet Mecole Hardman and recovered by New York.
A field goal conversion from Harrison Mevis extended the halftime lead to 17-3.
The second half was much of the same for New York. A Stone Smartt 24-yard touchdown catch on a screen turned Saturday’s contest into a rout to kick off preseason action for the Jets. New York would later tack on another field goal from Mevis to go up 27-3 early in the fourth quarter.
From there, the Jets coasted to their first victory of the Glenn era.
The Jets will be back on the field next Saturday, August 16 against the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium. On Tuesday, they will host the Giants for a joint practice in Florham Park.
Game Notes:
- New York had 11 players not participating in Saturday’s game. Defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, left guard John Simpson, and rookies Mason Taylor and Malachi Moore all did not play due to injuries.
- As strong a start as it was for the Jets’ defense, not giving up a scoring drive, they did commit five penalties in two drives. They finished with over 10 as a unit. New York was the most penalized team in the game last year, but Glenn’s Detroit Lions defense came in second. It wasn’t the best start in that category.
- Two key members of the 2025 rookie class did not play due to injury. One player who did was seventh-overall pick Armand Membou. The Missouri product was excellent in pass protection, with no pressures allowed in 10 pass protection snaps.
