Since Matt LaFleur was hired to be the head coach of the Green Bay Packers, he has consistently fielded a highly competitive and championship-caliber roster.

That playoff contender got overwhelmed by a lowly New York Jets team Saturday night.

In Aaron Glenn’s first exhibition game as head coach of the New York Jets, it was Gang Green that dominated the Packers to a 30-10 score. For the Pack, they played their starters on both sides of the ball, were on their home field, and still got eviscerated by a team that won just five games the year prior.

It was one of the more staggering preseason performances we have seen in quite some time.

And it left LaFleur searching for answers.

Jets humble Packers

There haven’t been many games over the last few years in which the Jets overwhelmed an opponent quite like they did on Saturday night. All three phases made excellent plays.

Whether it was Justin Fields’ 13-yard scamper, Leonard Taylor III and Jay Tufele teaming up for a defensive score, or Qwan’tez Stiggers forcing a muffed punt, Glenn’s team looked like a well-put-together unit.

For LaFleur, there was only one way to describe it:

“That was a humbling experience,” LaFleur said. “Definitely not what we want to put out there. I donโ€™t care, preseason, regular season, it doesnโ€™t matter to me. It was just sloppy football.

“Too many penalties, drops, missed tackles, bad decision making and it really showed up in every phase of football.”

Context is always important for a preseason game like this. Green Bay could use their performance, and with the talent on their roster, to catapult themselves to a top contender in the NFC.

The Jets may never be able to replicate what they did.

That’s why the preseason is what it is. It’s nothing more than a benchmark to make sure teams know where they are with players fighting for roster spots.

The fact that New York was able to “humble” Green Bay as much as they did, though, cannot be ignored. Glenn’s entire focus during training camp has been to instill a new level of toughness and physicality into the roster.

They showed that and more on Saturday.

It may very well be a flash in the pan. But if the Jets can find anyway to replicate the success they had against the Packers, then they will be a lot more fun to watch than they have been for the last decade.

And they just might pull off more wins than anyone expects.
