After trading for two defensive tackles on Wednesday, the New York Jets cleared space on the depth chart by releasing former second-round pick Phidarian Mathis, according to ESPN’s Rich Cimini.

A second-round selection out of Alabama in 2022, Mathis landed with the Jets late last season after being cut by the Washington Commanders.

Despite flashing potential in college, his production never carried over to the pros. In 23 NFL games, Mathis has posted 25 total tackles (two for loss) with a quarterback hit.

The pair of trades on Wednesday—for Harrison Phillips and Jowon Briggs—left the Jets little choice but to make room on the depth chart, and Mathis is the first casualty.

Phillips, a steady veteran who has started every game for Minnesota the past three seasons, gives New York a proven interior anchor. He finished 2024 with 56 tackles, two sacks, and five quarterback hits while serving as one of the Vikings’ most reliable defenders.

Briggs, meanwhile, is a second-year defensive tackle with developmental upside who logged 13 tackles, two quarterback hits, and a fumble recovery in limited action for Cleveland as a rookie.

The Jets’ quick turnover on the defensive line signals they are far from finished. With roster cuts looming, general manager Darren Mougey and head coach Aaron Glenn are expected to continue shuffling pieces up front and searching for the right mix of veteran stability and young talent to complement All-Pro Quinnen Williams.

The organization is expected to have to make more decisions up front before cutdown day, which is Aug. 26 at 4 p.m. ET.
