While the New York Jets suffered a rough 34-32 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers to open the season, one of several positives was the connection between quarterback Justin Fields and wide receiver Garrett Wilson.

Speaking to reporters following Gang Green’s nail-biting season-opening loss, Wilson shared how great it felt to be back on the field with his college quarterback.

“It felt good to be back out there with Justin and know that he got my back and I got his, and that is the mentality and the relationship we are going to take into every week,” said Wilson.

Wilson praised Fields’ performance, as the former Steeler completed 16 of his 22 passing attempts (72%) for 218 passing yards and a touchdown (which was thrown to Wilson), while adding two more touchdowns on the ground across 12 carries for 48 yards. Fields only took one sack and led the Jets to scoring drives on six of their 10 offensive possessions.

“That boy is a dog, that is the man I know, he don’t give up on anything, and stuff like that is inspiring to the dudes on the field with him,” said Wilson.

Wilson, the former Ohio State standout, turned in a strong debut after signing a four-year, $132 million contract, finishing with 95 yards and a touchdown on seven catches.

The Jets didnโ€™t get the outcome they wanted against Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers, but Fields and Wilson provided reason for optimism. Their timing was sharp, and Sunday offered a glimpse of how their connection could shape New Yorkโ€™s passing attack throughout the season.
