During the New York Jets’ 29-27 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the team surrendered two costly turnovers, including a critical pick-six thrown by quarterback Tyrod Taylor and a strip sack that allowed Tampa Bay to score a field goal and add to their point total ahead of halftime.
Speaking to the media following the team’s loss, veteran offensive lineman John Simpson accepted the blame for both mistakes, stating that he allowed pressure from Tampa Bay’s defense on both plays.
The Jets’ offensive line struggled mightily to maintain the Buccaneers’ defensive front; granted, head coach Todd Bowles had a blitz-heavy defensive game plan. New York allowed four sacks for the game, and before the Bucs’ defense started easing up in the second half, the Jets allowed pressure on 62% of Taylor’s dropbacks in the first half.
After struggling against a solid defensive unit, the Jets’ offensive line will have a more favorable opponent next week in the Miami Dolphins, who are tied for last in the NFL with just 2.3 quarterback hits per game this season. If New York’s offensive line struggles in that game, it will be concerning.

‘”We’ve got to focus on what’s ahead of us, and there’s a lot of football left. I feel like this team is on the up and up,” said Simpson. “It’s been three games, and I think we’re about to start clicking here soon.”
Simpsonโs accountability may be the spark this line needs. Soon, though, the Jets’ offensive front must translate its on-paper talent into results.
