Should the New York Jets turn back to Justin Fields at quarterback?
After backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor delivered an uneven performance in his first start with the Jets on Sunday, the debate has begun over whether the team should stick with him or return to Fields once he clears concussion protocol.
Longtime WFAN radio host and diehard Jets fan Joe Benigno believes the answer is clear.
“I think our best chance to win games is with Tyrod Taylor,” said Benigno during his weekly spot on “The Jake Asman Show” with host Jake Asman. “I think I know what Justin Fields is. They are going to draft a quarterback; they’re going to have at least a top 10 pick, let Taylor play, he gives us a better chance to win.”
Taylor had an uneven performance, completing 26 of 36 passes for 197 yards, two touchdowns, and a costly pick-six before halftime. He added 48 rushing yards on eight carries, as pressure often forced him to flee the pocket. Taylor was also sacked four times, losing one fumble.
Despite sparking a fourth-quarter rally with two scoring throws, Taylor’s inconsistency loomed large as the Jetsโ comeback fell short in a 29-27 loss.
Fields remains in the team’s concussion protocol, and it is unknown whether he will be ready to suit up for the Jets’ Week 4 matchup against the Miami Dolphins on Monday Night Football. Head coach Aaron Glenn confirmed Fields’ injury has not changed his status.
โJustin came in as our starter. Heโs been our starter. Tyrod was the backup,” Glenn told the media on Monday. “I want to make sure I know exactly where Justinโs at. I donโt want to say anything until I know that Justinโs clear. So once Justin is clear, Iโll let you know exactly where weโre going.โ
Whoever lines up under center, Benignoโs message rings true for every fan: they want to see wins.
