The New York Jets may be 0-4 to start the season, but that doesn’t mean every part of their roster has struggled.
In Gang Green’s 27-21 loss to the Miami Dolphins Monday night, the offense totaled over 400 yards and racked up 23 first downs.
Leading the charge for the offense was starting quarterback Justin Fields, making his return to the field after suffering a concussion and missing Week 3.
Fields completed 20 of 27 passes for 226 yards and a touchdown pass. He added a team-high 81 yards on the ground, including a sensational 43-yard scamper for a score.
New York may have lost on Monday, but the coaching staff viewed Fields’ performance as a positive.
Jets impressed with QB1
Even though Fields looked strong on Monday, he is still just 14-33 as a starting quarterback in the last five seasons with the Chicago Bears, Pittsburgh Steelers, and now the Jets.
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn made it clear, though, that the former Ohio State product was a reason why the team was even in the game.
“I thought he played pretty well,” Glenn said on Tuesday morning. “We had like nine explosive plays within that game, which we would look to get about eight every game, and he was a huge part of that with his arm and with his legs.
“We want to build off that, because the three games that he’s played in, he’s had two games where he was really solid, and we want to build on those things. I’m encouraged by that.”
In the loss, New York fumbled three times, committed 13 penalties, and had numerous breakdowns in coverage. While Fields did account for one of the fumbles lost, he still completed over 70 percent of his passes and kept the Jets in the game despite the myriad of mistakes.
There are several reasons why the Jets fell to 0-4 with a nationally televised loss to a previously winless team. According to his coaching staff, Fields is not one of those reasons.
Consistency is the next part of Fields’ development as a passer. After a strong season-opening game against Pittsburgh, Fields struggled mightily in the Week 2 loss to Buffalo.
Now, after a strong showing against Miami, Fields must prove he can chain together quality starts.
