Two weeks after publicly disclosing that he was battling kidney disease and in need of a transplant, former New York Jets center Nick Mangold sadly passed away Saturday night.
Mangold anchored the Jets’ offensive line for more than a decade after being selected in the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft.
The Ohio State product became the heartbeat of New York’s offensive line, helping guide the team to three playoff appearances and back-to-back trips to the AFC Championship Game. During his career, Mangold earned seven Pro Bowl nods and was twice named a first-team All-Pro.
Retiring after the 2016 season, Mangold was officially inducted into the Jets’ ring of honor in 2022.
“Nick was more than a legendary center,” Jets Chairman Woody Johnson said in a press release. “He was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade and a beloved teammate whose leadership and toughness defined an era of Jets football. Off the field, Nick’s wit, warmth, and unwavering loyalty made him a cherished member of our extended Jets family.”
“On behalf of the entire Johnson family and the New York Jets organization, we offer our sincere condolences to Jenny, their four children — Matthew, Eloise, Thomas, and Charlotte — as well as to Nick’s extended family, friends, and all who loved him,” said Woody Johnson.
He was 41.
Rest in peace, Nick Mangold.
