New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields may have saved both his tenure in New York and his future as an NFL starter with Sundayโs thrilling 39-38 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.
Earning his first win in green and white, Fields delivered not only his strongest performance since joining the Jets but arguably the most significant game of his professional career.
What did Fields do differently than weeks prior?
According to Pro Football Focus, Fields’ 80.8 passing grade ranked as his second-best mark across his past 24 games, trailing only his Week 1 outing this season. He recorded two big-time throws without a single turnover-worthy play, both of those throws coming under pressure.
Fields was rarely pressured behind a thriving offensive line, but he showed excellent poise in those rare instances. The fifth-year quarterback posted a league-best 93.9 grade when pressured, the highest of any NFL quarterback in Week 8.
Behind consistent protection from his offensive line, Fields trimmed his average time to throw to 2.92 seconds, his second-fastest of the season. It represented significant progress in an area where he has struggled mightily throughout his career, especially this season.
Fields stayed calm in clean pockets, made quick, confident reads, and elevated his play as the Jets’ defense struggled. It was a complete, composed performance that gives the Jets reason to believe theyโve found something to build on.
Breaking crazy career stat
Entering Sunday’s contest, Fields had led his teams to an 0-26 record when the opponent scored at least 21 points. He was the only quarterback over the past five seasons to be winless in that scenario, among 46 with at least 10 such starts.
That winless streak came to a halt on Sunday.
Not only did the Jetsโ defense surrender more than 21 points, but they nearly gave up 40.
While the Jets’ defense will not allow 38 points every week, Fields must continue to elevate his play regardless of the defenseโs performance. He did that on Sunday, but sustaining it will be crucial over the remainder of the season.
Fields is capable of showing promising flashes; Jets fans saw it in Week 1. In his fifth NFL season, though, the challenge is no longer about potential.
Itโs about consistency.
Overcoming pre-game storylines
After a sluggish first half in the Jetsโ Week 7 loss to the Carolina Panthers, Fields was benched in favor of veteran Tyrod Taylor.
The Ohio State product then faced heavy public criticism from team owner Woody Johnson while competing with Taylor for the starting job during the week.
When a knee injury prevented Taylor from traveling to Cincinnati, Fields was given another chance to start, though his confidence appeared to be shaken.
It didnโt matter. Fields fought through adversity and led the Jets to their first win of the season.
As Jets X-Factorโs Nick Faria noted, that kind of poise and resilience is exactly what NFL teams look for in their quarterback.
Big test out of the bye week
Coming out of the bye week, Fields is set to face one of the NFLโs toughest defenses in the Cleveland Browns, who rank fourth in the league with 24 sacks. The unit recorded six sacks against the New England Patriots on Sunday, five courtesy of star pass rusher Myles Garrett.
For Fields, the challenge is to prove that last weekโs breakout wasnโt another one-time spark. To establish himself as a starter in the league, he must provide reliable production week in, week out.
