The New York Jets’ first winning streak under Aaron Glenn came to an abrupt end.
After back-to-back wins over the Bengals and Browns, who have a combined 5-15 record, the Jets got a reality check against the rival 9-2 Patriots, who cruised to a 27-14 win.
However, for a team that came in as 12.5-point underdogs, the Jets put up a respectable fight. They had an eight-minute touchdown drive to open the game, trailed by just seven entering the fourth quarter, and came within striking distance of cutting the lead to six with under three minutes remaining.
Glenn’s squad was held back by talent limitations that the team cannot fix until the offseason, specifically at quarterback, wide receiver, and all over the defense. Still, some of the team’s core long-term building blocks put forth strong performances, helping the Jets stay somewhat competitive in a road prime-time game against a far more talented team.
Up front, the Jets’ young offensive line continued showing promising flashes in a battle with New England’s excellent defensive line. On defense, Jowon Briggs and others showed positive signs against the Patriots’ offensive line.
While Justin Fields’ struggles at quarterback are well-documented by now, the Jets’ passing game offered many chances to evaluate intriguing young players.
Former second-round picks John Metchie and Adonai Mitchell received plenty of opportunities at wide receiver; one thrived, one did not, although both players displayed upside. Meanwhile, second-round rookie tight end Mason Taylor continues to quietly show high-level potential despite his underwhelming box score stats.
Final score aside, did the Jets’ trip to Foxborough offer any long-term positives for fans to feel optimistic about? Which players are trending up? Which players may be playing themselves out of a future starting spot?
