He’s the biggest pending free agent on the New York Jets this season.
There’s also a chance he may never get to free agency in the first place.
Running back Breece Hall has spent his first four NFL seasons carving out a role as one of the better all-purpose running backs in the game. He’s coming off his first 1,000-yard season with Gang Green despite winning all of three games in 2025.
Hall is set to become a free agent once March rolls around, but the Jets can circumvent that entirely by placing either the franchise tag or transition tag on the former Iowa State star.
One of the top analysts at NFL Network believes the Jets’ Hall problem has a pretty simple answer.
Jeremiah pushes Jets’ clear plan
On his “Moving The Sticks” podcast, Daniel Jeremiah made it very clear what he would do if he were running the Jets this offseason when it came to Breece Hall.
Don’t let him leave.
“Iโm not letting him walk out of the building,” Jeremiah said. “You are not finding anyone better than Breece Hall in this draft, I can tell you that right now. That is one hole that weโve plugged in the boat.”
The Hall conversation is quite interesting. The franchise tag for a running back this season is projected to be worth $14.5 million. However, the transition tag cost is $11.7 million. That nearly $3 million difference could go to a different player or entice an offer for a top star.
There’s a difference between the two tags, however. The standard franchise tag prohibits the free agent from negotiating with other teams, while the transition tag allows them to seek opportunities elsewhere; however, the player’s original team has the right to match any offer.
For New York, though, the question is this: Are they capable of paying a running back โone of the league’s least valuable positionsโthe kind of money that would be considered an overpay for a good but not great player?
Hall has certainly had his moments of domination. He’s also had inconsistent stretches that show a clear talent disparity between him and the top-tier running backs around the league, like Christian McCaffrey and Saquon Barkley.
In the end, though, Gang Green may end up taking Jeremiah’s advice. It would not just be because of Hall’s potential for greatness, but also because they have so many needs along the roster that adding running back to the list would seem unnecessary.
At least for this season.
