When is enough actually enough?
For the last five years, the New York Jets have pinpointed their offensive line as a key area to improve through the draft. The organization has selected an offensive lineman within the first two rounds in five of the last six drafts.
Some, like Armand Membou, Olu Fashanu, and Joe Tippmann, have worked out well. Others have not.
Ultimately, though, the Jets’ investment in their line has paid off. It’s the one thing that New York can feel good about on the offensive side of the ball.
Going into 2026, the Jets’ offensive line isn’t just seen as one of the few strengths of the team, but one of the best groups in the league.
It’s what makes Daniel Jeremiah’s latest mock draft pick for the Jets so confusing.
Jeremiah takes Jets in unique direction
NFL draft expert Daniel Jeremiah is one of the better analysts at this time of year. His ability to identify future standouts has made him well respected in the community.
Still, Jeremiah’s latest prediction of where the Jets will go with the 16th overall selection in April is perplexing. The NFL Network analyst predicted New York will draft Penn State offensive lineman Olaivavega Ioane, which would bring the Jets to six offensive linemen drafted within the top 50 in the last seven years.
“I know quarterback is a huge need for the Jets, but I donโt see a QB worthy of the 16th overall pick this year,” Jeremiah said. “So, they can take the best player available here. I view Ioane as the best offensive lineman in the draft. He can fill the void with the injury-plagued Alijah Vera-Tucker and John Simpson headed for free agency.”
As Jeremiah said, with Vera-Tucker and Simpson heading to free agency, the argument for the Jets to draft a starting guard could make sense. But there is, of course, a simpler solution: re-signing either of the two starters.
Whether it’s keeping a former first-round pick in AVT or rewarding a reliable leader in Simpson, either would maintain the offensive line’s continuity for the 2026 season. It makes more sense than adding another need to a depth chart with plenty of them.
In fairness to Jeremiah, this won’t be the only mock draft he brings out over the next two months. Mock drafts, by nature, are intended to build excitement and generate talking points for the selection process.
All things considered, it seems pretty unlikely that the Jets will be taking another offensive lineman in the first round.
