A decision has been made about running back Breece Hall’s future with the New York Jets.
The Jets have used the franchise tag on Hall, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who also notes it’s a “placeholder” while the two sides negotiate a contract extension.
After four years with the team, Hall, 24, was a looming free agent this offseason. He’s coming off his first 1,000-yard rushing season and is one of the better receiving backs in football.
New York isn’t allowing Hall to test his worth in the open market, though. The Jets have officially franchise-tagged their star running back on the last possible day โ taking the decision down to the deadline, Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. ET.
By being placed on the franchise tag, Hall is set to be paid over $14 million โ the price for tagging a running back in 2026. It also means that the team can tag Hall one more time in his career.
The Jets’ decision did not come lightly. New York could have applied the transition tag for Hall at $11 million. This would have allowed the Iowa State product to negotiate with other teams, but the Jets would get final say on an offer deal for the former second-round pick.
It is also unclear what Hall’s feelings are at this time.
The running back was open to returning to the team, but is not getting the long-term deal he will be looking for at this moment. New York could still negotiate a multi-year extension now, but most players on the tag remain frustrated.
The most notable case for a running back was former New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley. The Giants tagged Barkley twice and frustrated the veteran by not offering an extension that the veteran felt was equal to his value.
When Big Blue ran out of potential tag opportunities for him, Barkley ran to their biggest rival and won a Super Bowl.
That comparison is years down the road for the Jets, though. In the moment, they retain one of their better offensive players on a group that was among the worst in football last season.
Tuesday’s decision means Breece Hall will be back in 2026, and the New York Jets are better off as a football squad.
