Despite trading for veteran quarterback Geno Smith, rumors have swirled that the New York Jets may still be interested in adding another experienced signal-caller. New York could also draft a quarterback in April.
Does that mean that Smith, the team’s current penciled-in QB1, may have to compete for his job in the summer?
Head coach Aaron Glenn addressed that question on Sunday.
Aaron Glenn makes Jets’ QB situation clear
In a conversation with NFL Network, Glenn said “definitively” that Geno Smith is the Jets’ starting quarterback, according to Judy Battista.
Glenn’s comments end any speculation that Smith may have to compete for the Jets’ starting quarterback role in the summer, whether it’s against another veteran, a rookie, or both. Per the head coach, Smith is on track to start for New York in Week 1.
The Jets’ commitment to Smith is a vote of confidence in his three-year body of work with the Seattle Seahawks from 2022-24. Starting 49 games over that span, he completed 68.5% of his passes for 249.5 passing yards per game, 71 touchdowns, and 35 interceptions, posting a 95.5 passer rating. Smith won over half of his starts in all three seasons.
Smith came back down to Earth in 2025 with the Las Vegas Raiders, completing 67.4% of his passes for 201.7 yards per game, 19 touchdowns, and 17 interceptions, with his passer rating dropping to 84.7.
New York believes that Smith’s smooth fit in the scheme of offensive coordinator Frank Reich is precisely what the doctor ordered to get the veteran passer back up to the heights he reached in Seattle.
