The NFL’s pre-draft process is always grueling for executives and scouts around the league. It’s no exception for the New York Jets, who own two selections within the top 16 picks tonight.

So when a team decides to cancel visits with certain prospects, a red flag goes up across the league. That’s what happened when New York chose to forego a visit with Texas Tech’s David Bailey.

Owning the No. 2 pick, Bailey is seen as a logical solution to New York’s issues at edge rusher. He led the FBS in sacks last year and plays with a violent athleticism that makes him among the most feared prospects in the draft.

So why would the Jets cancel a top-30 visit before the draft?

Speaking just 24 hours before he expects his name to be called, the Texas Tech product shared his thoughts on the matter.

Bailey speaks out on Jets’ canceled visit

For what it’s worth, Jets general manager Darren Mougey explained that the league and fans shouldn’t look into the canceled visit with Bailey on Tuesday too deeply.

โ€œWith Top 30s, every team uses them differently. Some donโ€™t even use them. When we do them, every single player and case is different โ€ฆ in regards to David, we had good touchpoints with him at the combine and his pro day,โ€ said Mougey.

โ€œI wouldnโ€™t look too much into a cancellation.โ€

For as relaxed as Mougey was about their canceled visit, Bailey explained what he couldn’t do because he didn’t arrive at Florham Park.

“They canceled my 30 visit, so I wasn’t able to get around the facility and have an in-depth conversation with all the staff,” Bailey said. “But I had a great interaction with them at the combine, and then obviously FaceTime calls weโ€™ve been having.โ€

Through the pre-draft process, the Jets have had Bailey meet with defensive line coach Karl Dunbar and head coach Aaron Glenn.

New York’s choice not to use every possible resource on a player could lead others around the league to believe the intended prospect may not be the one the organization wants at the end of the day.

It’s worth noting that the Jets did meet with Arvell Reese for a top-30 visit.

Why meet with one and not the other? Especially when there’s a debate over which player can be the better fit for New York’s scheme?

The reality is that the Jets have a difficult decision to make at No. 2. Their actions regarding Bailey’s top-30 visit could lead some to the logical conclusion that Reese is their intended pick.

With under 5 hours remaining, the Jets’ thought process with the No. 2 pick remains as unclear as ever, leaving fans to read between the lines on moves like a canceled top-30 visit. Tonight, New York’s thoughts on both players will be made quite clear.
