After an atrocious year at the position in 2024, the New York Jets’ kicking game was among the best in football during the 2025 season, thanks to a career year from Nick Folk.
This offseason, though, the team let Folk walk, as the 41-year-old signed a two-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons. Folk leads the NFL in field goal percentage over the past three seasons (96.3%).
The Jets currently have three kickers on the roster: Cade York, Lenny Krieg, and undrafted rookie Will Ferrin.
โWeโre really excited about the process we got going on,โ Banjo said of the Jets’ kicking situation. โBoth guys (Krieg and York) are very talented, and weโre excited to have them in the building. Weโre looking forward to attacking this every single day.โ
Despite the situation apparently looking dire, Jets fans shouldn’t be overly worried.
Understanding where the Jets are at kicker
All three of York, Krieg, and Ferrin are largely unproven at the NFL level. York is the only one with NFL regular season experience, having played in 23 games.
A 2022 fourth-round pick, York has flashed his leg strength, as he holds a career-long of 59 yards. Consistency, though, has been the overarching issue. He has been on six different teams since entering the league, which is telling, while his career field-goal percentage is 73.3%, including four misses from under 40 yards.
On the other hand, Krieg, a native of Germany, entered the league last season through the NFL’s International Pathway Program. The 23-year-old drilled all 14 of his kicks at the NFL Scouting Combine while hitting a 57-yarder last preseason with the Atlanta Falcons.
Then, there is Ferrin. In 2024 at BYU, he broke out, connecting on 24 of his 27 kicks (88.9%) while converting four of his five tries from beyond 50+ yards. He also hit all 41 of his PAT attempts. During the 2025 season, though, he wasn’t as reliable. His field-goal percentage dropped to 76.7% after missing seven attempts.
While none of these options are proven, it is important to keep the end goal in mind. As our Michael Nania pointed out, the Jets just need one of these three players, who have each shown flashes at different points, to find that consistency and be the team’s starter.
There is also a possibility that the Jets’ Week 1 kicker isn’t on the roster.
In 2025, the Jets didn’t sign Folk until July. If York, Krieg, and Ferrin aren’t up to snuff, the team could add a veteran in the summer.
The top available veteran kickers include Matt Prater, Daniel Carlson, Brandon McManus, and Graham Gano.
Altogether, fans shouldn’t fret too much over the team’s situation at kicker. They have three bites at the apple in-house, and if things don’t work out, they can fall back on the free agent market.
