The Brendan Sorsby situation officially has a final verdict.

After multiple turns in the saga, including his declaring for the NFL’s supplemental draft, the league announced it will not hold a supplemental draft in July.

Overall, it is a terrible situation for Sorsby. After forfeiting his NCAA eligibility for the 2026 season, which he was granted by a Texas judge, to apply for the supplemental draft, he will need to figure out plans for the 2026 season.

Regardless of which route he chooses, it will almost certainly have a significant impact on his draft positioning next year. Aside from the off-field character concerns, this is another layer teams will need to keep in mind.

Ultimately, this is the best-case situation for Jets fans.

Why this is good news for Jets fans

As we dissected, if Sorsby were to be in the supplemental draft, it would have been wise for the Jets to avoid placing a sizeable bid on the quarterback.

Now, Jets fans won’t need to worry about that possibility.

For those out there who were against going after Sorsby, this is music to your ears. You no longer need to worry about the Jets trying to rush their future at QB by spending future draft capital to force a young signal-caller into the building.

The plan will move forward as expected: Gang Green will play out the 2026 season and most likely select their quarterback of the future in the 2027 NFL draft.

It’s a resolution that Jets fans should be pleased with. Beyond the character concerns Sorsby brings to the table, his play last season wasn’t at a level that warranted a high-end bid, such as a second- or third-round pick.

Evaluators spoke about him as a potential first-round pick in next year’s draft under the assumption that he would take another stride with Texas Tech in 2026. If he were to declare for April’s draft, he could have been a fringe Day 2 pick, but most likely a Day 3 selection.

In hindsight, it appears that declaring for the draft in April would actually have been the wise move for Sorsby and his camp.

The Jets will now have no chance at adding Sorsby before next April’s draft.

New York will roll into the 2026 season with Geno Smith as their starting quarterback, hoping all of the off-field drama blows over with fourth-round rookie Cade Klubnik competing for the QB2 job against Bailey Zappe and Brady Cook.

For now, the Jets and their fanbase can finally turn the page on any discussion regarding Sorsby.
