Entering his first season as the New York Jets’ offensive coordinator, Frank Reich will play an integral role in the team’s offensive production this season.

While it is fair to question the hire given his recent NFL results and wonder whether his scheme is outdated, the good news is that his tendencies seem to align with the Jets’ QB1, Geno Smith, and their primary pass catcher, Garrett Wilson.

Speaking with Eric Allen on the “Official Jets Podcast,” former Jets quarterback and two-time Comeback Player of the Year, Chad Pennington, expressed his excitement for what Reich could accomplish as Gang Green’s OC.

“Frank is an amazing human being,” said Pennington. “He was a great player, and he has developed into a really great coach. The reason that I’m excited is that every time you have a coordinator who can see it through the quarterback’s eyes, it changes everything because he understands how difficult it is. All the guys that will be working with Frank will really enjoy that he can see it through their eyes, and that will change everything.”

Granted, it isn’t a very high bar, but the Jets’ offense should improve and, at the very least, appear watchable this year compared to recent seasons.

As I noted above, the good news is that Reich, Smith, and Wilson all profile as an ideal fit on paper, which could make Reich’s job easier.

Reich’s tendencies also suggest he could unlock tight end Mason Taylor as he enters his second NFL season and make strong use of rookie TE Kenyon Sadiq.

During Reichโ€™s first season with the Indianapolis Colts (2018), Eric Ebron posted 13 touchdowns. In his two seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles (2016-17), Zach Ertz led the team with 12 receiving TDs.

Taylor, who thrived as a contested catcher during his rookie campaign, could emerge as the Jets’ go-to target in the red zone under Reich, while Sadiq could emerge as an all-around weapon for his system.

To be competitive this season, Reich will need to modernize certain areas of his scheme, but ultimately, his fit with the Jets’ current offensive personnel is there.
