Florham Park, N.J.โ Injuries are the last thing you want to see in training camp, especially to key players.
During Monday’s training camp practice, folks had to hold their breath for a second as New York Jets star running back Breece Hall went to the ground in clear pain.
After catching a pass from Geno Smith, Hall ran upfield before going to the ground while wincing in pain. He was untouched, making it a non-contact injury, which only added to the scare.
The running back got up with help from the team’s training staff and walked under his own power for evaluation, although he was still clearly in pain.
Speaking to the media following practice, head coach Aaron Glenn shared that Hall strained his groin and will undergo further testing.
Aside from Hall, wide receiver Garrett Wilson also missed practice alongside veterans Minkah Fitzpatrick and Demario Davis.
The good news, however, is that they didn’t miss the day due to injury. Wilson is dealing with an illness while Fitzpatrick and Davis had veteran rest days, Glenn told reporters following practice.
Additionally, undrafted rookie Mory Bamba, who lit it up during New York’s preseason opener, will miss a few weeks with a knee injury.
In other injury news, while he wasn’t participating as he continues to work his way back from a hernia setback, rookie tight end Kenyon Sadiq was present for Monday’s practice. He was in uniform while holding his helmet.
T’Vondre Sweat also returned to practice after sustaining a hamstring injury that left him on the NFI (Non-Football Injury) list to begin the summer.
According to Glenn, the defensive tackle will be on a “pitch count,” as he gets back to full strength. For someone of his size, at 6-foot-4 and 366 pounds, this time of year is critical for him to get conditioned and ready to go for Week 1.
Joseph Ossai, who has been on the PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) list since the summer started, also participated in team drills today and returned to the field.
Finally, Geno Smith, who was held out of Friday’s preseason game due to an ankle issue, was a full go in practice today although he wore a sleeve on his lower left leg.
Above all, the positive news today is that Hall’s injury doesn’t appear to be serious, while there is nothing to worry about with Fitzpatrick, Davis, and Wilson.
Backup running backs stand out
While Hall left practice early and Isaiah Davis continues to recover from a minor knee injury, Monday’s practice provided a nice opportunity for the Jets’ end of the depth chart running backs to stand out.
Braelon Allen, Kene Nwangwu, and UDFA rookies Sam Scott and Chip Trayanum all made plays throughout the morning, while Scott stuck out to me in particular.
At 6-foot-1 and 213 pounds, Scott is an interesting player. He has a very solid blend of speed and size, which are always important traits in a UDFA back.
Obviously, he is a long shot to make the Jets’ roster given how crowded the team’s running back room is. I wouldn’t be surprised, though, if he sticks around on the team’s practice squad.
His vision also caught my attention. The Jets’ offensive line as a whole looked good in the run-blocking game and helped spring Scott and Allen loose in multiple situations.
Kicking update
Both Cade York and Jason Sanders attempted eight field goals during practice on Monday. Sanders drilled seven of his eight attempts, with his lone miss coming from 54, where he missed short and to the right.
On the other hand, York missed three attempts, from 48, 51, and 54 yards. Two of the misses were wide left while the third banged off the left crossbar.
In my opinion, Sanders seems to be the favorite to win Gang Green’s job. While Glenn continues to preach that there is an open competition and that York could win the job, Sanders appears to be the right choice.
Sanders, 29, has been far more reliable than York throughout his career. Before missing the 2025 season with a hip injury, Sanders made his last 27 field goal attempts with the Miami Dolphins in 2024, while York has been on six different teams in four years.
Other news and notes
When it came to the real practice, there wasn’t a clear winner of the day or any stars who consistently stood out.
Mason Taylor and Jelani Woods each made a few nice plays, while Taylor made a very solid catch right near the goal line on a solid ball from Smith and held on after a push from a defender behind.
Smith tossed one interception on the day, intending to hit Isaiah Williams downfield, but missing him by a wide margin, and the ball fell right into the hands of safety Andre Cisco.
Cisco remains in a competition for the Jets’ No. 2 safety job as he battles it out with Dane Belton, who had a strong performance in the team’s preseason opener while boasting an intriguing track record.
The Jets only have one more practice this week before they head to Pittsburgh for Friday’s preseason matchup against the Steelers. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST.
