Will Justin Fields return as the New York Jets’ starting quarterback when cleared to play?
Backup signal-caller Tyrod Taylor had a chance to create something of a controversy in relief of the absent Fields, but the 36-year-old delivered an inconsistent performance in his first start as a Jet during the team’s 29-27 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, head coach Aaron Glenn revealed whether Fields will remain the Jets’ starter when doctors clear him to return from the concussion he suffered during Gang Green’s blowout 30-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 2.
“We’ll talk about that today as a staff,” said Glenn. “We’ll make sure we come out with the right answer for that. I know what you’re trying to ask, but we’ll make sure we talk about that as a staff, first and foremost.”
On a follow-up question, Glenn confirmed that Fields’ status has not changed since his injury.
“Justin came in as our starter. He’s been our starter. Tyrod was the backup. I want to make sure I know exactly where Justin’s at,” said the first-year head coach. “I don’t want to say anything until I know that Justin’s clear. So once Justin is clear, I’ll let you know exactly where we’re going.”
Fields currently remains in the league’s concussion protocol and has not yet been cleared to participate in practice.
It remains unknown whether the Ohio State product will be healthy enough to suit up for the Jets’ matchup this week against the 0-3 division-rival Miami Dolphins on Monday Night Football.
